A letter to Apple
To whom it may concern:
Here’s the scenario:
I use numbers … a lot. I evangelize it to others. Thus, I use it in our busy production / post production facility. I use it to track weekly deck usage, meeting notes, post schedules, project proposals… I use numbers alot.
The way for me to stay on the latest version of a document, is icloud….only iCloud.
This morning, Monday morning, I started up the decks (of which we have 7, that are worth over 100K each.) -I need to take care of these decks.- I then started up numbers on my ipad, and all of my tracking documents started disappearing before my eyes. … ALL OF THEM (well all but one- from aug 17… a keynote presentation for my uncle’s birthday). I quickly ran to my iphone… they started disappearing there too!
My title at my place of employment is “Chief Technologist” -Cheesy, I know- but I state that to clearly state that I know what I’m doing when it comes to tech. I know where the ‘mobile documents’ folder is. I went to it and it was empty- I did not empty it. I did not move it, rename it or chmod it. Popular blogs have had exposes about people who have messed with this folder- and I understand the implications of a ‘Live’ folder.
So there I am, left with only my Carbon Copy Cloner Clone of my system to save me. I fire it up- mount the sparseimage of my system. And Voila, the Library folder is no where to be found. Turns out that as of Mac OS 10.7 the library folder is hidden (I knew this) but what I didn’t know is that the manner in which Apple has hidden this folder, makes it invisible to a cloning tool. This is the ONLY folder that didn’t get cloned.
I call applecare, and now I sit on my hands WITHOUT ANY DOCUMENTS for 24 hours while tier 2 gets the engineering team to look into the situation…
This should not happen. Now I cannot trust iCloud and as a buying decision maker with my company, I cannot recommend the service professionally either.
I really wanted iCloud to work as good as mobile me, but that is not the case. I should also say that I have been with the service since iTools, and this is the first time that this has happened so catastrophically…With mobile me- you would at least be left with your local copy that you could repopulate with.
This is a sad day for me.
